As a Shopify user, you know how heartbreaking it is to see customers abandon their carts. All those potential sales, just slipping away! Luckily, Shopify has a built-in abandoned checkout feature to help you reel those wandering shoppers back in. But here’s the thing: Shopify doesn’t make it super easy to send more than one abandoned checkout email. Frustrating, right?
No worries though, because I’ve got your back. In this post, I’ll show you how to set up multiple abandoned checkout emails using a couple of handy apps. And we’ll chat about why you might be better off with a dedicated email marketing platform.
What's an Abandoned Checkout Email?
First things first, let’s talk about what an abandoned checkout email is. Essentially, it's a gentle nudge sent to customers who added items to their cart and made it to the checkout page, but didn’t complete their purchase. It’s like saying, “Hey, you forgot something awesome in your cart!”
Shopify triggers this email automatically when a customer reaches the checkout page, enters their email address, but then, for whatever reason, doesn’t finalize the purchase.
The One-Email Problem
Here’s where Shopify’s default abandoned checkout automation falls a bit short: it only includes one email. That’s it. One lonely email, hoping to catch your customer’s attention. If they miss it or ignore it, you’re out of luck. But fear not, because with a little know-how, you can add extra emails!
How to Send a Second Abandoned Checkout Email
Step 1: Install Shopify Email
- Go to the Shopify App Store.
- Search for "Shopify Email".
- Click "Add app" and follow the prompts to install it.
Step 2: Install Shopify Flow
- Go back to the Shopify App Store.
- Search for "Shopify Flow".
- Click "Add app" and follow the prompts to install it.
Step 3: Add An Abandoned Checkout Automation
- From Shopify, Go to "Marketing" > "Automation".
- Click "View Templates" and then "Abandoned Checkout" > "Turn on automation".
Step 3: Configure the Flow
Now this is where the magic happens. Here we'll be editing the flow to include an extra email so the flow has two emails, rather than just one. Here's what you do:
- Open Shopify Flow from your Shopify admin.
- You will see the Abandoned Checkout automation that you just created.
- Click on "Abandoned Checkout", and then click "Edit"
- Scroll to the right until you reach the last step ("Send Marketing Email").
- Click on the blue + sign next to "Then" and add an "Action" step, select "Flow" then "Wait". Set your desired wait time.
- Next, add a "Condition" step, and set the conditions to the following:
- Add another "Condition" step and set to the following:
- Now add a new "Action" step, and select "Email" then "Send Marketing Email". Select the Abandoned Checkout email template.
- Edit your email templates and wait times to your liking and you're done!
- Your newly created steps should look like this:
You're all set! You now have two abandoned checkout emails! If you want, you can add a third email by repeating this process.
Why You’re Better Off with a Dedicated Email Marketing Platform
While setting up multiple abandoned checkout emails with Shopify is possible, it’s a bit clunky and time-consuming. Plus, Shopify’s email tools are pretty basic. If you’re serious about recovering those abandoned carts, you might want to consider a dedicated email marketing platform like Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign. These platforms offer more sophisticated automation, better design tools, and detailed analytics. They can send a whole series of emails with personalized content, discount codes, and more. Plus, they integrate seamlessly with Shopify, so you won’t miss a beat.
Signing Off
By installing a couple of apps and modifying Shopify's default flow, you can create an abandoned checkout with multiple reminders and improve your chances of recovering those lost sales. It’s a bit of a workaround and can be a tad clunky, but hey, it works!
However, if you’re looking for a smoother, more powerful solution, a dedicated email marketing platform is the way to go. They offer more features and flexibility, making it easier to bring those wayward shoppers back to your store.
